{"id":5933,"date":"2022-08-29T20:37:43","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T01:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abundantlife.hwacollege.org\/?p=5933"},"modified":"2022-08-29T20:37:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T01:37:43","slug":"smiling-makes-you-a-better-runner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abundantlife.hwacollege.org\/?p=5933","title":{"rendered":"Smiling makes you a better runner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Noel Brick, Richard Metcalfe, The Conversation<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/12\/health\/smile-running-energy-partner\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many top athletes use periodic smiling during performances to relax and cope<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study finds that runners used 2.8% less energy while smiling than frowning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For athletes of all levels, endurance \u2013 how long they can keep going at their chosen sport \u2013 is made up of physiological and psychological factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2375555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Physiological factors<\/a>&nbsp;include cardiovascular fitness, and how efficient an athlete is at using energy (their \u201cmovement economy\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A critical psychological factor, on the other hand, is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27240002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;perceived effort<\/a>, or how hard we feel we are working during an activity. The lower our perceived effort, the easier we feel that an activity is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, any strategy that reduces how much an athlete perceives it to be an effort generally has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25771784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">positive effect<\/a>&nbsp;on endurance performance.
